  1. A "civil summons" is a document served on you that lets you know that a person is suing you – it is not the lawsuit itself, that is called a "Complaint". Most states require the Complaint to be served with the Summons. All the Summons does is place you on notice about the lawsuit and tell you how long you have to file a response.

    And yes, you can be sued for credit card debt. It happens every day.
